H.E Maxime Verhagen, Netherlands Minister for Foreign Affairs, addressed The Sydney Institute on Tuesday 20 January 2009, an important time in global affairs – as the US welcomed its new president Barack Obama and a change of administration and as the war in Afghanistan entered a new and more dangerous phase. Maxime Verhagen stressed the close ties, going back decades, between Australia and the Netherlands, from immigrant history to joint co-operation between the Netherlands and Australia against terrorism in both Afghanistan and Iraq.
