In March, the federal Minister for Housing and the Status of Women, The Hon Tanya Plibersek, announced that more than 31,000 public and community homes in NSW – including 7845 that are uninhabitable – will be repaired and upgraded under the federal government’s economic stimulus plan. Some $130 million would be spent over two years upgrading and repairing public housing in Sydney and regional towns. On Thursday 19 March 2009, Tanya Plibersek addressed The Sydney Institute to further explain how the federal government planned to rejuvenate public housing and better provide for those needing housing support.
